A breathtaking detailed high relief cameo, a beautiful miniature work of art, made of lava and ash soaked earth, maybe from Italy's Mt. Vesuvius.  This cameo features the profile of a woman in a silver setting.  It's in wonderful condition and measures approximately 1 5/8" long and about 1 1/2" wide.  This style of cameo emerged at the dawn of the 19th century. During that era, Europeans and well-heeled Americans enthusiastically embarked on the Italian Grand Tour. In those days, pre mobile phone cameras, the eager tourists would bring back meaningful souvenirs of their trips – thereby showing proof of their lavish holidays.
