ORIGINAL 1971 ANDRE MARARE 'CORPS TATOUE' MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE

This is a great piece. In fact, this is one of my favorite pieces I have bought in the last few years.  I think it is really a very special piece and am happy to own it until someone purchases it.  This is really a museum quality piece that very well could or should be in a museum.  This is probably one of the earliest known pieces by important Tahitian artist Andre Marare.  For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below.  Marare is really a very special Tahitian local artist.  His work was most recently included in a major retrospective at the Museum of Tahiti and the Isles.  In his biography, it is discussed that he began his earliest career being part of exhibitions at the Winkler Gallery. I am guessing this is one of his first.  Exhibited in the 1971 Biennale de Collages this is a wonderful cut sticky paper and felt paper collage on a yellow backing. Measuring 26 x 22 3/4 inches it is in excellent as created condition. Original frame and even has the original exhibition price list verso.  Acquired from a local estate that bought it at the exhibition in Tahiti in 1971. Frame measures 27 x 23 3/4 inches.  Do your own research on this incredible piece and artist.  Really a museum quality piece.  FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES!

For those not familiar with the artist his biography from a gallery that exhibited his work back in 2015 reads: "Well known to local art lovers, André Marere had not been present in a gallery for three or four years. For his return, he chose that of the Tropics where he unveils his new exhibition entitled “Made in Vairao”. He is one of the rare Polynesians who paints with fenua, and we can almost say that he was born with a brush in his hand. Born in mainland France to Polynesian parents, the artist set foot in Tahiti as a teenager, when he was 14, and his first exhibition dates from the 1970s, when his works were hung on the walls of the Winkler gallery. At the time, spectators discovered posters, notably displaying superb tikis.

Decades later, tiki are still one of his favorite themes. Among the acrylic paintings exhibited at the Galerie des Tropiques, they still occupy a predominant place in Marere's work today, alongside tapa, petroglyphs and tattoos. Indeed, André confides that he is “very attached to Polynesian art, and more generally to ancient culture”. Those nostalgic will also find old works of his which are brought back to light. The artist also shows scenes of local life, which aptly express the sweetness of the Presqu'île where he lives because, he says, "the setting is not only magnificent but above all, the people are pleasant". This well-being is felt in his paintings, which alternately depict a family fishing, children jumping in the lagoon, vahine confiding their secrets, a pensive matahiapo, or even abstract landscapes. Its exhibition “Made in Vairao” is a pure moment of relaxation and an invitation to contemplation. "
