Antique Russian wool shawl. Pavlovo Posad. Second half of the 19th century.

The famous Russian wool shawl with a printed pattern.

The Russian wool shawl is the most famous subject of Russian applied art of the 19th century. Like Europe, Russia began to use the paisley image with weaving. However, Russian masters have always supplemented oriental ornaments with traditionally Russian patterns.

Woolen Russian shawls inherit the weaving traditions of the early 19th century, when even Josephine Bonaparte, the wife of Napoleon I wore Russian shawls.

Such shawls were used not only in noble and merchant, but also in wealthy peasant families. In order to show wealth, a Russian girl could simultaneously wear 10-12 shawls.

The presented shawl was made at the most famous Russian factory - Pavlovo-Posad manufactory.

Size without fringe: ~ 117x114 cm (46”x44.8”), length of fringe ~ 12 cm (4.7”)

Material: wool

Manufacturing technology: weaving, hand-printed, braiding

On a black background there are traditional elements of the Russian woolen shawl - the center and wide ornamented border. The center is filled with small paisley ornaments. The border is a wide garland of lush roses.

Shawl comes from my own family collection, which my great-grandmother began to collect.

I ask you to carefully consider the photos. The shawls are about 150 years old. Of course, it has traces of existence: minor holes, spots and other traces and wear marks. There are tissue tears on the sides of the shawl. Loss of fringe.

By color, you need to focus on the full image of the shawl. It most accurately conveys color.

I ask you to take the attention that the wool shawl cannot be washed. Water should be avoided. Only restoration cleaning is possible.
