- Fantastic antique 1920's flapper style black silk velvet wrap coat with ruched pleated sleeves ending in a deep (11cm) flat cuff and with a fantastic generous stylish real fur collar which sits flat around the shoulders or which can be pulled up high around the neck and face for a bit more of a 1920's 'film star' look
- I've been told that the creamy white fur collar is ermine? It is very soft and plush to the touch and looks identical to the fur trim described as ermine on other similar 1920's fur trim evening coats recently sold on eBay.
- The jacket drapes beautifully. The fit is I would say around a UK 12 (I am a UK 12 jacket and it fits me). Obviously it could be worn by UK 8 or UK 10 too as these jackets were intended to be worn loose and hugged around the body. It has no closure button which I think was normal for the time.
- The interior ivory silky satin fabric lining is a lovely contrast to the inky black of the velvet. With no closure, when you move and it swings open it would make a nice dramatic flash of contrast colour lining against the black velvet.
- I can see no brand labels.
- For its age I think this coat is excellent. The velvet pile is still good and the black is not faded or marked and in my view it does not appear 'tatty'.
- For its age I think the appearance is very good. The velvet pile is still good and does not look 'tatty' with age and the black colour is not faded.
- The fur has no odour, is still supple and is stable with no signs of shedding that would indicate that it is breaking down. The fur does show some half a dozen or so minor (in my opinion) breaks/patches of losses but these are quite small and in my view not significant. They are mainly around the back edge of the fur collar and so are not noticeable when worn (see photo 6 taken in bright daylight) especially as the nap of the surrounding fur can be brushed over them. I have brushed away surrounding fur and taken a photograph - see final photo (his was under electric light sorry so the fur has come out looking yellow compared to the colour shown in the daylight photos).
- On the inside, half the right sleeve lining has become separated from where it joins the lining at the armhole (not a rip) so this just needs reattaching (an easy sewing repair job). It looks like the other sleeve has had a similar re-attachment repair. There are some signs of wear to the lining: some tiny holes and thinning . The underside lining of the collar has a pale small mark and some tiny holes plus the join to the velvet nape has come loose 2-3 inches in length-again an easy re-attachment repair-it is not ripped. All these 'issues' are invisible when the coat is being worn.
- I have tried to give a comprehensive description and hope I have given sufficient details but if anyone has questions please just ask.
- I bought this from an antique shop years ago but it has been stored away unused and I have no further use for it so it is part of my massive clear-out.
- I have very good feedback.
