Antique, 19th century, Italian olivewood secret storage box intended for religious devotive items, i.e. rosary, crucifix, ring etc.

The lid displays an inlaid mother of pearl crucifix accompanied by four carved crucifixes surrounded by marquetry.  The word "Jerusalem" is carved into the top.

The front of the box presents seven faux book spines on a faux shelf. The "shelf" slides to the left allowing the centre book spine to slide down to reveal a small button. Depressing the button releases the lid to reveal a red lined interior.

The item is very attractive and shows sign of extensive use over many years with the patina and some minor losses to marquetry to the lid and one end (see photos).

The size of the box is 15cm long x 11.5cm wide x 12.5cm high. Weight is 725g.
