Luthier John Graven was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1946.
In 1967, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he built his first guitar in parallel with repairs.

He has built guitars for many top musicians, including Johnny Cash, John Denver, Stephen Grossman, Mary Chapin Carpenter, George Harrison and Janis Ian.
In Japan, Isato Nakagawa, Michinori Okazaki, Kotaro Oshio and others are favorites, especially fingerpickers.
In recent years, dreadnoughts have become a standard, but the J model is a 16-inch small jumbo size that was produced in many in the 1990s.
