You are bidding on one interesting militaria letter from 1848 out of Dresden.

Written by one Member of the “technical company” (composed from students of the technical college in Dresden to support the municipal guard); with a beautiful one Sketch of the company).

About the Technical Company in Dresden (Source: Reiner Pommerin: 175 Years of TU Dresden: History of TU Dresden 1828-2003, Cologne / Weimar / Vienna 2003, p. 44): "But initially the political events in Germany and Saxony are in the foreground of general attention: at the beginning of February 1848, Director Seebeck founded the Technical Company from the students of the technical college. However, as one student tells his parents, some of the rifles distributed to the students are 'not shootable at all'. But the students of the technical college, in contrast to the student units of the polytechnic school in Hanover or even the Vienna Polytechnic at the time, did not become active on the side of the revolutionaries. After all, it seems that the events of May 1849 did not leave even the young students of the technical college unaffected, as they witnessed the construction of barricades and the fighting in Dresden's city center."

Written by Robert Schiller to his brother Max Schiller, student at the Kgl. State school in Grimma.

The author is Carl Robert Schiller (* 4. March 1825 in Zittau, died. 7. April 1894 in Leipzig), later royal retired Saxon artillery lieutenant and since 1855 head of the Hospitals St. Georg im Rosental in Leipzig, who was previously his father Karl Benjamin Schiller (1796-1855) directed (honorary citizen of Leipzig since 1851).

His brother was Johann Maximilian Schiller (* 4. May 1835 in Leipzig), died on 11. September 1870 as a captain in the Royal Saxon 5. Infantry Regiment No. 104 as a result of the wounds he received at the Battle of Sedan on January 1st. September 1870 suffered. On the 22nd In October 1866 he married Fanny von der Gablenz in Plauen (* 4. December 1846 in Bautzen, died. 20. May 1915 in Dresden).

Dated Dresden, 5. June 1848.

Excerpts: "Since I can now quite well imagine that you can't always be in a funny mood, I will at least try to amuse you with a few cheerful lines.

The most perfect opportunity for this is offered by: technical company. The events of the time have induced the heads of the institution to commendably join in the sacrifices of others and to give up their pennies and their lives for the general good. A choir was formed from the pupils of the institution, which voluntarily joined the Communal Guards. Anyone who was over 17 years old and as well built as possible was irrevocably drafted into Attila's wild gang. Of course I too was one of those unfortunates, although I made all sorts of deterrent and defensive gestures. There was a drill every evening for a week, like crazy, and when we had really learned the ropes, we showed ourselves in perfect beauty in Dresden's streets and on the parade ground. Our company consists of 107 men in total and for the sake of large numbers we have also hired a drummer. This awe-inspiring mass has been divided into 4 platoons with the necessary platoon leaders and troop masters. I will try to give you a successful (!) picture of our choir and I will let us parade past."

This is where it followed Sketch of the Corps (Captain and the four platoons).

"The more detailed description of this well-ordered whole is as follows: You will be able to tell from the captain's mouth that he just commanded 'Left shoulder forward!' Degree! out of! Shoulders rifle.....he."

A drawn one above the commands staff.

Then a humorous description of the company ("the first platoon, to which I belong, has the tallest people").

At the end about an adventure in the forest and forester's lodge.

Signed "Your dearly loving brother Robert Schiller."
