An amazing vintage to near antique, stone encrusted Tibetan Buddhist medallion of exceptional quality. The medallion measures 3.25”H X 3.25”W and hangs from its original 15” chain. It weighs 88 grams.

The front side of the medallion is a work of art. Featuring four Buddhist gods or bodhisattvas created from natural coral, lapis, turquoise and enhanced with cabochon ruby stones. The central two figures are a god fashioned from lapis stones with 4 arms holding various objects who sits crossed legged on top of another god made of coral who is crouching with his arms open as a set of wings made from mother of pearl unfurl behind him. These two are flanked by a pair of turquoise gods on each side. The composition of the group is stunning!

The back of this piece is also decorated with a scrolling filigree and a mask face studded with all the same gems and stones used on the face of the piece.

There are many of these pieces on the market. They were produced for tourists in the early part of the 20th century. This is the finest example of this type I have ever seen. Made at a time when even tourist pieces were made by fine craftspeople. Please note: the original clasp is missing and replaced with a small safety pin.
