Julia Brown, an African American lady of Cleveland, Ohio, is hoodwinked into joining the Communist Party to work for "civil rights",  becomes disillusioned, quits, then informs the FBI of subversive civil rights fronts. Later the FBI asks her to rejoin the Party as undercover agent. She succeeds and for nine long years, avoiding detection, works for the Party while reporting to the FBI.
