Art Style: Cusco School student paintings can be characterized by their almost total exclusivity of religious subjects. As one examines multiple works, one notes the artists' lack of perspective, and their predominant use of earth tone colors based in reds, blacks and yellows. Further, they show a penchant for using stunning gold leaf accents, especially when painting images of the Virgin Mary. Though the painters were tutored in Byzantine, Flemish and Italian Renaissance artworks, their paintings tended toward a freer, more independent style than those of their European artists.
