The SWEG (Suedwestdeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft) VT-25/VT-26 railbuses were introduced in the early 1950s as low-cost replacements for steam locomotives that had reached the end of their service life on many of Germany's private railways. It was developed by MAN for non-federal government-owned railways following the introduction of the VT95 series railbuses of the DB (formerly West German National Railways), and production began in 1955, with 38 vehicles being introduced to non-federal government-owned railways.
