Overview:
This 218 type electric locomotive of DDR (former East German National Railways) is a new model number based on the computer numbering of DRG (German Reichsbahn) E18 type electric locomotive. By 1933, DRG's E17 type electric locomotive had been successful as an express passenger locomotive, but in response to the demand for an even higher speed of 120 km/h, the structure was changed from the E17 type electric locomotive, and the electrical aspects were changed to the E04 type. In 1935, 55 E18 electric locomotives were built by Krupp and AEG based on the E18 electric locomotive. After World War II, five operable locomotives and six damaged locomotives remained in the DDR, but the five operable locomotives were confiscated by the Soviet Union as war reparations in 1946, and later After its return in 1952, it was sold to DB (formerly West German National Railways) as it could not be operated due to delays in route electrification. Four of the damaged locomotives were subsequently restored between 1958 and 1960, two of which were installed as new vehicles in 1969 for the Mechanical Engineering Test and Development Center (VES-M Halle) in Halle. As a high-speed test vehicle, it was refurbished to support a maximum speed of 180 km/h, and the remaining one was refurbished in 1970, but one was scrapped in 1972 due to a collision. In addition, two vehicles that were in operation in 1970 were given the new model number 218, and remained in service until 1991, when German Railways was reunified, and were scrapped. The car body design was a German favorite, with an egg-shaped front like the 103 Electric. It was the first electric locomotive with an egg-shaped front, and the first to have a driver's seat.
This model is the 19th machine that was first modified for Hare Depot, and has a dark green painted body which was the standard color of DDR, and a red painted underbody, after computer numbering. In addition, the step for the driver's seat is an aftermarket part in consideration of passing through curves.
