This is a rare February 4th, 1929 program (playbill) from the Stratford-Upon-Avon Festival Company, two-week engagement at the Studebaker Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. (The company toured after their theater in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England was destroyed by fire in 1926. The new Shakespeare Memorial Theatre would open in 1932.) ..... The Shakespeare repertoire included three performances of "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW" starring WILFRID WALTER as "Petruchio", OLIVER CROMBIE as "Vincentio", DOROTHY MASSINGHAM as "Katharina", GEORGE HAYES as "Tranio" and MARY HOLDER as "Bianca" ..... On February 5th, 1929, the company presented the first of two performances of "HAMLET" starring GEORGE HAYES in the title role, DOROTHY MASSINGHAM as "Gertrude", WILFRID WALTER as "Claudius", ERIC MAXON as "Horatio" and JOYCE BLAND as "Ophelia" ..... On February 6th, 1929, the company presented the first of two performances of "JULIUS CAESAR" starring KENNETH WICKSTEED in the title role, ERIC MAXON as "Marcus Brutus", GEORGE HAYES as "Cassius" and GEORGINA WYNTER as "Portia" ..... Also on February 6th, 1929, the company presented the first of four performances of "THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR" starring ROY BYFORD as "Falstaff", LAURIER LISTER as "Fenton", MARY HOLDER as "Mistress Ford" and DOROTHY MASSINGHAM as "Mistress Page" ..... On February 7th, 1929, the company presented their only performance of "KING HENRY THE FOURTH" (Part One) starring GEORGE HAYES in the title role, ERIC MAXON as "Henry, Prince of Wales", WILFRID WALTER as "Henry Percy (Hotspur)", C. RIVERS GADSBY "Henry Percy (Earl of Northumberland)", GORDON BAILEY as "Thomas Percy", OLIVER CROMBIE as "Owen Glendower", LAURIER LISTER as "Edmund Mortimer" and R. ERIC LEE as "Prince John of Lancaster" ..... On February 8th, 1929, the company presented the first of three performances of "A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM" starring LAURIER LISTER as "Oberon", GEOFFREY WILKINSON as "Puck", MARY HOLDER as "Titania", ERIC MAXON as "Lysander", JOYCE BLAND as "Hermia" and GEORGE HAYES as "Demetrius" ..... On February 11th, 1929, the company presented their only performance of "KING RICHARD THE THIRD" starring GEORGE HAYES in the title role, JOYCE BLAND as "Lady Anne", KENNETH WICKSTEED as "King Edward IV", DOROTHY MASSINGHAM as "Queen Elizabeth" and MARGARET GASKIN as "Prince Edward" .....
