RARE, LARGE ALLY SLOPER JAR AND COVER C 1885
~ BRITAIN'S FIRST CARTOON ANTI-HERO ~
This is a very well-painted jar and cover, modelled as the late-Victorian cartoon character, Ally Sloper.
The model stands around 20 cm tall. His hat measures around 15 cm from front to back, and the base measures around 10 cm from front to back.
This is a rare model, seldom encountered.
It dates to around 1890 - 1910, when the character's popularity was at its height. In 1885 Sloper had made the jump from being one of many characters in the magazine Judy,
to having his own publication in Ally Sloper's Half Holiday - the name of the publication advertised on the crown of his hat.
