These striking oil on board portraits of a Federal Civil War Captain and his wife are in very fine original condition and are framed in their original, identical oval gilt wood frames. They measure 23" tall by 20" wide. There are some small nicks to the frames which is common on frames of this age and could be touched up with a bit of gilt or gold leaf if desired. There is a sliver off the wife's frame at the recessed bottom that is hard to see when hung as one has to look up under it. That happened due to my unfortunate experience with my moving company when I moved from upstate NY to Lancaster PA last spring. On the back of the Captain's portrait is the identifying information:

"George Washington Smith
Father of Sarah Belle Smith Bartholomew
and David William Smith"

I have never done any geneological search on this family but it should be fairly easy to find Captain Smith's records in the National
Archives and other Civil War databases.

I have owned these portraits for a few decades and have taken good care of them. They are well-executed and painted by a talented artist. There have been some touch-ups to the portraits here and there but this does not detract from their value or how beautifully they display.
