Original Imperial German WWI Flat Shovel (Repainted)

There is a hole in the blade.  Holes were sometimes punched into the blade Post WWI?  I'm pretty sure this is not a bullet hole -- the metal edges are too clean around the hole.  Blade has been repainted and the paint could easily be removed.  The handle is solid and shows its age but still excellent condition.
