This is a rare P.N.G Sepik area ceremonial mask or a smaller maskette.
This specimen shows significant patina on both sides.
A lot of the surface facial paint has flaked off to reveal some of the beautiful oxidized dark orange paint which I believe was called "Dutch Orange". The Dutch mariners bartered this European paint with the Sepik people in the eary 20th century (1900 - 1915).
This specimen is quite nice and looks much better in person.
This small mask comes with a good quality custom metal stand.
Provenance: This piece is ex Michael Evans (he's director of ethnographica art at Bonhams Skinner).
Measurements: length is 12 inches.
