SAMUEL READ 1815-1883

FINE ORIGINAL PEN & INK ILLUSTRATION

PROBABLY FOR THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS

LADIES BUYING SHOES

Measures around 22 cm x 28 cm

Unframed and unsigned.

With Abbott and Holder, and bearing their distinctive stock code the reverse of the sheet.

The original mount - sadly now disintegrated - carried the artist's name: Samuel Read.

This is a really good comic drawing from the 1870/80s showing ladies out buying shoes at a fashionable boutique. The expressions are brilliantly captured, from the shopkeeper's look of rhapsodic delight to the uncertainty of the would-be buyers and the unabashed hilarity of the sole man in the room...

Read worked a great deal for The Illustrated London News and we think this drawing might have been intended for that publication.
