Ndoma face mask for the Mblo dance of the Baule People

the Baule, Baoule or Bawule are Peoples from west Africa,

it shows an egg-shaped face, with a long slender T-shaped nose, a high forehead,

the hairdo is shaped as a crescent moon

raised scarifications on the temples and between the eyebrows,

downcast eyes, a closed mouth and beard

age: probably first half 20th Century

condition: some signs of age and handling - some scratches and dents. no cracks, no missing parts, firm wood

provenance: an auction of a private collection from The Netherlands

Mblo Masks are one of the oldest in Baule traditions. The portraits are often associated with a known individual. 

Baule people believe that these types of masks have always existed and were said to have

 “emerged from the earth” or ”descended from the sky”.
