ART TALK and other conversations

by Shirley M. Dawson

Art and community, gardening and dying: these are themes that occupy former artist and art critic Shirley Dawson. Culled from ten years of blogs, this septuagenarian writes bluntly and honestly - in funny, short, stream-of-conscience bursts - about losing loved ones, her ongoing struggle with forgiveness and her ambivalence about public art. During her fifty year career as an independent artist, a gallery owner and an art writer, she still counts creative people as her favorites. Her blogs were aimed mostly at home town issues, but the insights are universal.

Author Biography

People in Rochester, New York, know Shirley best for her work in the art community. She began Dawson Gallery in 1981, an art space that promoted sculpture and art from craft media. During its twelve-year history, the gallery earned a national reputation for the quality of its exhibits and the high ethical standard that were maintained working with artists, collectors from around the country and regional education institutions. After closing Dawson Gallery in 1993, Shirley continued to work for the arts as an art critic for Rochester newspapers and feature writer for such trade magazines as "Ceramics Monthly", "Metalsmith Magazine", "Fiberarts" and "Ceramics Art and Perspective." Her parallel public life was as an advocate for good urban design and a cheerleader for downtown Rochester - pushing especially for increased residential options. She served as President of the Coalition for Downtown for two terms in the early 1990's.
