.
Diary of Philip Edwards as he and his companions bought 700 cattle from Yerba Buena and Mission San Jose, and drove them north through the northern San Joaquin Valley, up the mountains, past Mount Shasta, and into origin - suffering and struggling the whole way as only a true wrangler can imagine.  The view of California in its early years as a remote outpost is brilliantly and sparingly described.  A classic tale.
