For your consideration, you are viewing an Antique Circa 1871 piece of French military history. This is a French M1866 Sword Bayonet complete with Scabbard is from the Yataghan series of bayonets, and was designed for use with the 11 mm. M1866 Chassepot rifle, officially known as Fusil modèle 1866, was a bolt action military breechloading rifle, famous as the arm of the French forces in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 where the Chassepot met its Prussian counterpart, the Dreyse needle-fire rifle. The M1866 bayonet also mounts to the 11 mm. M1874 Gras rifle. The "Chassepot" was manufactured from 1866 until after the introduction of the 1874 Gras. In 1866 these were issued to the French Army and the Legion.
The M1866 rifle and bayonet were referred to as the "Chassepot", after its inventor, Antoine Alphonse Chassepot. "Yataghan" comes from the Turkish word for "one who lays down" to describe the downward sweeping double curve blade. The double-curve added strength and rigidity while keeping the hilt and point in alignment for thrusting efficiency. The M1866 has a very rich and colourful history, it was used extensively in many wars and also by the famous French Foreign Legion, (French Légion étrangère,) a special elite military force, originally composed of foreign volunteers who were paid by France and gained the reputation as 'The World’s Premier Mercenary Corps."
This is a Government manufacturer and was produced at the Châtellerault State Arsenal. Early French bayonets are engraved on the spine of the blade with the factory, month, and year of production. Commercial examples are marked with the maker and place of production, but no date. This example's engraving reads "Mre Nle de Chat Fevuer 1871". Which translates to - "Manufactured at National Government Arsenal at Chatellerault in February 1871."
#CHAT – CHATELLERAULT: The d'Armes de Châtellerault, was a French-owned weapons manufacturer in the town of Châtellerault, Vienne. Created by a royal decree in 1819 to manufacture swords, and after 1850, it manufactured firearms and cannons. In 1840 Antoine Treuille de Beaulieu developed the concept of rifled artillery at Châtellerault for the French Army. The Lebel Model 1886 rifle, the first military firearm to use smokeless powder ammunition and the primary French infantry weapon during World War I, was developed and produced here.
The French wars during the "life-span" of this bayonet were:
- Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871.
- French Indo/China in 1873-1874 and 1882-1883
- Sino/French War 1883-1885
- Madagascar Wars 1883-1885 and 1895
- 1st Mandingo/French War 1883-1886
- 1st Dahomeyan/French War 1889-1990
- 2nd Dahomeyan/French War 1892-1894
- 2nd Mandingo/French War 1894-1895
- Conquest of Chad 1897-1914
- 3rd Mandingo/French War 1898
- Moroccan War 1907-1912
- World War I
This French bayonet has a solid brass hilt with a push-spring steel latching mechanism on the right side. The crossguard is steel and the upper guard is the muzzle ring which is tightened by a screw. The lower guard formed a hooked "blade-breaker" quillon. The blade is steel, single-edge re-curved or double-curved Yataghan blade which has been fullered on both sides, the scabbard is sheet-rolled blackened steel with a ball finial with a raised fixed belt bar.
