A heavy square Ottoman or Persian cigarette box from the early 1900s. It is made of solid 875 purity silver with intricate hand chasing. The top is engraved with an eight sided medallion which is surrounded by a border with florals and birds and then another narrow border of small flower heads, all reminiscent of a Middle Eastern rug design. All four edges have a border of two repeating flower designs. The background is stippled or cross-hatched. The box is intended for a tabletop and probably for cigarettes, although it could have a multitude of uses. The heavy hinged lid lifts up and closes by seating inside the edge of the box. It has Arabic marks: 84 (zolotniks) or 875 purity and HP?, a maker's mark on the inside of the cover.

The case measures 3 5/8" (92mm) square and 1" (25mm) high. It weighs 196 grams or 6.3 troy ounces. It shows some wear and scratches on the bottom and nicks on the edges especially the front left corner...see the photos. Because the silver is quite thick, most imperfections can be ground or polished out.
