Khmer Fragmented Stone Sculpture of a Standing Buddha. Phnom Da Style 5/6th C.

Title: Standing Figure of a Buddha, Khmer Pre-Angkorian, 'Phnom Da' Style. Sakon Nakhon Province, Northern Thailand.

Overview: A superb Khmer Buddha Figure, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Phnom Da' style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is presented in its original unrepaired condition as found, a solid stone fragment discovered over 60 years ago in the Ban Muang district of Sakon Nakhon province of northern Thailand, duly noted as possibly the earliest period of Khmer art. The statue is stylistically related to the group of statues found in southeastern Kampuchea on the Phnom Da Hill near Angkor Borei, from which derived the art historical term, the 'Phnom Da' style of Cambodia, and which dates to the fifth and sixth century. As with images from this period, the features and ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity, appearing delicate and refine with natural movement. The statue measures 20.75 inches (52.71cm) in height including the removable stand.

Description: The statue is exceptional, displaying typical Indian movement of the torso with supple modeling, fashioned with an avoid face and hair arranged in overlapping ringlets with a dome-shaped topknot, with the ears uncovered. The face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene expression, incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, wide mouth, and elongated ears.
XXX The Buddha is masterfully modeled in realistic human form, standing with both legs broken, wearing a loincloth hung low at the waist and folded in front, forming a vertical flared panel carved in relief, and is tucked in below the navel. The modeling of the slightly muscular body appears to have been based on natural observation. Typical of Phnom Da images the original sculpture would have displayed the arms elevated, bent at the elbow, and hands with open-palms facing outward.
