TITLE BELGIAN CONGO: to be clear, the history includes also what precedes the colony proper, i.e. from the Stanley exploration through the Congo Free State as King Leopold II 's private property, and finally 1909 when Belgium took over the Free State as colony, along with the two protectorates Ruanda and Urundi from Germany.
Date of issue: according to the statistics provided in volume 1 it covers up to 1928 and volume up to 1929 suggesting the year of publication to be 1930.
This is a typical history of colonialism: euphemistic and optimistic presentation of the "benefits of civilization" and erasure of atrocities galore, nevertheless tons of interesting facts are provided. Furthermore, the rich illustration with hundreds of b/w photos, most half to full page, provides a historical view into bygone cultural features, of which parts were still present at the accession to the independence. Many of the photos are of good resolution quality.
A few watercolors in color are present, 1 color photo of fetiches of the nowadays Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium and a +/- 9 sq ft color map of the Belgian Congo incl. the Protectorates of Ruanda and Urundi (spelling of the time).
