Title: Antique Bronze Gilded Meditating Sukhothai Buddha, Temple Relic, Thailand 18/19th C.

Description: An exquisite bronze meditating Sukhothai Buddha, from a temple precinct in northern Thailand, beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved with exacting detail. Temple blessed and consecrated, Buddha sits on a single-level pedestal, measuring 16.0 inches (40.64cm) in height.   

                   
XXX A spiritual image of Buddha portrayed seated on a single level base, meditating in the 'Virasana' pose, one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands in mudra, with the left hand resting palm open on his lap, while the right hand forms the 'bhumisparsa' mudra, Calling the Earth to Witness, the gesture.
XXX Buddha is modeled with broad shoulders, inflated chest, and a narrow waist, wearing a long sanghati robe in the 'Open Mode' worn diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder uncovered, with the end fold draped to his mid-section.    
XXX The elongated head bears an ovoid face, with outlined curls of the head dip into the middle of the forehead, downcast eyes like lotus petals, set beneath arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, and bow-shaped mouth with an insipid smile. Earlobes are elongated and stop short of the shoulders. The head is covered by large snail-shell hair curls,surmounted by a domed 'Ushnisha', rising to a tall flame finial.  
XXX Cast in the lost wax method, the bronze surface has a rich gold gilded finish with traces of Blackened lacquer beneath. The core within the bronze consists of a tempered sandy-clay mixture. The core is completely in tack.
