Marked: Lampe Berger, Made in France

French Oil Lamp

This is the "A Universelle" model, which was produced between 1910 and 1930- most probably the first and most famous model from Lampe Berger. Diamant shaped thick glass.
Marked on the neck of the lamp "Lampe Berger" and (opposite side) "Made in France". Unused burner. Pewter cap.

As per Wikipedia- the background behind the Lampe Berger oil lamps-
"The Berger lamp was originally intended to "clean the air of hospitals" in 1898...
The principle of disinfection of the atmosphere by the Berger lamp is based
on the use of catalytic combustion. This process was discovered by the chemists Justus von Liebig and Charles Gerhardt.
Maurice Berger , a pharmacy technician, develops his lamp and files the patent on
June 16 , 1898.
Originally known as a "hygienic smoke ventilator", this invention was based on the catalytic combustion of gasolines and was intended to clean the ambient air of premises requiring permanent hygiene such as hospitals or morgues.
Its commercialization began around 1902 in some Parisian pharmacies before Maurice Berger opened his shop in 1910 at 18 rue Duphot in Paris."

If you would examine carefully the Lampe Berger antique advertisement (available on the Wikipedia page  https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lampe_Berger#/media/File:R%C3%A9clame_Lampe_Berger_1925.jpg)
you can see that they originally had few models, some with the Baccarat crystal (Cristal de Baccarat, French known crystal maker) and some others Cristaux d'Art Galle. I tend to suggest my oil Lampe Berger could well be Baccarat crystal.

There is a chip on the base- please see the last two photos - else, true to its age (uncleaned, with some patina on the neck).
