ES-5134E
Valentina Brodsky was introduced to Marc Chagall by his
daughter Ida in Apr 1952 as a housekeeper, just after the end of Marc's
relationship with Virginia Haggard. Marc and Valentina married on 12
Jul 1952. They remained in Provence, France. The couple settled in the town of
Saint-Paul-de-Vence. "Vava" was the driving force behind the artist's
prolific work in his later years. She particularly encouraged his design of
stained glass windows for many churches and cathedrals during the period
between their marriage in 1952 and his death 33 years later. Valentina was
widowed in 1985, and buried her Jewish husband in the local Catholic cemetery.
She also died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and was survived by her brother Michel Brodsky. Valentina Brodsky Chagall is
interred with her husband in the cemetery at Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Her brother
Michel is buried there as well.
