Here for sale is my 1993 Subaru Legacy GT turbo.
It currently reads around 59,000km on aftermarket 240km/h clocks, but also included is the original 180km/h clocks which read around 80,000km. It does still read and count in KM, I did purchase a very hard to find speedo converter (included in sale) from an early Impreza in the hope that it would fit, however the cable connection is slightly different, it may be able to be fitted with some modification, but I just got used to reading in KMs.
It's a very rust free example having only been imported in 2019 by Team Legacy then bought by myself in early 2020 and only covering around 10,000km since import. It hasn't been undersealed so there's nothing being hidden, and often gets comments about the lack of rust from my mechanics.
It is quite a nice spec car benefitting from a few options the UKDM cars never received such as automatic climate control, power folding heated electric mirrors and a very primitive keyless entry system! As you would expect from one of these it has electric windows all round with 1 touch drivers window and has the optional factory rear roof spoiler and rare genuine Subaru 5 piece floor mat set in excellent condition.
During my ownership I've serviced it myself every year using Millers oil, NGK spark plugs, new fuel and oil filters. The battery was replaced last year, it had all 4 coil packs replaced and a new 355lph fuel pump shortly after I bought it. I also had all 4 brake calipers refurbished using all new stainless hardware and pistons and powder coated in bright red.
Here is a rundown of the modifications done to the car:
- JDM coilovers
- Aluminium Radiator
- STI front seats
- V3 Impreza STI gearbox with ratio matched Cusco centre diff, 1.5way front LSD and 2way rear LSD
- Lightweight flywheel
- Lightweight crank pulley
- Genuine Subaru 4 pot front calipers (refurbed as mentioned above) with grooved discs all round
- Aftermarket air filter
- Remapped (unsure on power output as I've never dyno'd it, does have the ESL board inside the ECU to allow further tuning)
- Air to air intercooler conversion (I was told most of the plumbing still remains if you wanted to convert back to a chargecooler set up, but never investigated this myself)
- Aftermarket BOV
- V7 Impreza STI wheels in excellent condition, with 4 matching Yokohama tyres. Plenty of treat, but are quite old and cracking came up as an advisory on the last MOT
- Aftermarket deep dish alcantara steering wheel with quick release hub
- Weighted metal gear knob
- Ganador stainless steel exhaust (subtle rumble, no drone at all)
- Limo black window tints from the B-pillar back
- Front strut brace, lower chassis brace (never seen this on one of these) and various other bits of engine bay bracing
- Harness points on the drivers side
- Blitz turbo timer
- Sony XAV-601BT double din DVD headunit with bluetooth for calls and music, Carrozzeria (JDM equivalent of Pioneer) speakers front and rear, including subwoofer in the boot. It does have a CD changer in the boot and a navigation unit under the seat, but these are not connected and untested.
As with any 30+ year old car there are going to be some bad bits too... The paintwork is its biggest let down. It's suffered from sunburn, the worst being along the tops of the doors, there is a little bit of lacquer peel on the mirrors and the roof and bonnet have been spraypainted matte black (presumably to cover more sunburn) and some of the door handles have lost their paint. There are a couple of marks on the bumper corners and it does have a few door dings, but generally it is a very straight car. The boot carpet has some staining on it, but I'm quite confident this would come out with a deep clean. The load cover is quite tired and beginning to split in places, I do have some other load covers from other Legacys in various conditions and if I can find where I've put them I'll include them with the sale, you may be able to make a good one out of them all. The clutch bite is quite high when cold, however this does get better when it's all warmed up, and if I'm being super critical the gear linkage feels a little sloppier than I'd like it to be, but I'd wanted to swap in a short shifter anyway at some point as I'd like the throw to be a bit shorter too. The drivers door central locking solenoid has locked up and been disconnected so the central locking currently doesn't work, relatively simple job to swap in a new solenoid or even fit an aftermarket remote locking kit, but I'm just not confident pulling doors apart. The A/C needs regassing, but I never did enough miles to bother with it and I generally prefer to have the window down anyway as I've not had many cars with A/C.
Overall it's a very good usable 1st gen Legacy that you can enjoy driving how it was intended rather than being a garage queen that you're scared to drive in case you get a stone chip. With a little bit of effort it would make an excellent drivers car or even an unusual daily driver as it's still a relatively sensible car!
Personal plate will be removed prior to sale, any viewings/inspections are welcome, and if you have any questions feel free to send me a message!
