In the first century BC, the Roman empire is decadent and dependent on
slave labor. A slave gladiator, Spartacus, leads a rebellion in
the arena and escapes with his fellow slaves. Crossing the
countryside in search of escape from the empire, more slaves join them
and they grow to the size of an army - an army that is a possible
threat to the powers that be in Rome. An action-packed, deeply
emotional drama.

film was released at 184 minutes long in theaters, then later restored

After Spartacus' army is trapped, the survivors are offered their lives
(as slaves) if they will identify Spartacus among them. Every man
stands and proclaims, "I am Spartacus!" and the real Spartacus' cry is
lost in the maelstrom of noise.
