Dark Funeral's debut studio album, The Secrets of the Black Arts, was originally released on January 28th, 1996. The album features the unique talents of guitarist Blackmoon, vocalist/bassist Themgoroth, and drummer Equimanthorn.

Produced by Dan Swanö at Unisound Studios in January of 1995, the album's original recording was met with dissatisfaction from Blackmoon, who believed it suffered from unprofessional production and the band's then-drummer playing below their capabilities. Despite the rest of the band being satisfied with the recording, Blackmoon insisted they re-record the album. The band then recorded the album at The Abyss Studio, which was eventually released to the public.
