royal AUTOGRAPH CABINET CARD: GRAND DUCHESS ELENA VLADIMIROVNA of RUSSIA. Scarce
Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia [1882-1957], also known as Helen, was the daughter of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. Raised by her mother and an English nanny, she spoke English as her first language. As a young girl, he had a temper and was sometimes out of control, becoming highly conscious of her social status as she matured. Initially engaged to Prince Max of Baden, he backed out of the engagement, causing gossip in society circles about Elena's difficulty in finding a husband. Prince Nicholas of Greece first proposed in 1900, but Elena's mother was reluctant to allow her daughter to marry a younger son with no real fortune or prospects of inheriting a throne. Elena and Nicholas eventually married in 1902 after it became clear that no other offers were on the horizon for Elena. At Court, Elena's "grand manner" tended to irritate people, but her marriage was a happy one. She and Prince Nicholas had three daughters: Olga, later Princess Olga of Yugoslavia; Elizabeth, later Countess of Toerring-Jetternacht; and Marina, later Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent.
