Offering a very rare Art Nouveau sterling silver & 14k gold letter opener in George Shiebler's Etruscan or Medallion pattern. Created late 19th century.

This marvelous large letter opener features a central Roman soldier whose face is bathed in gold. He’s framed in what appears to a spider web and is wearing a helmet with a serpent and a snake below. He is further framed in acanthus leaf decoration. Signed, Shiebler, sterling & 14K, Irwin R. Brayton (Retailer) and 93x. Many collectors believe that numbers followed by an x are usually an indication of an experimental item. Those pieces were issued in limited quantities. No monogram.

Measuring: 10 1/4+” Long, Almost 1 1/2” Wide and Weighing 46.9 grams.

The condition is excellent. The slightest bit of waviness near the blade end. Could probably be straightened if so desired. The handle is mint. No damage or wear. The gilding on the soldier’s face is bright and covers completely. He was difficult to photograph. Please see photos.

If you collect only the best and very rare, consider adding this great item to your collection.

Note: I’m selling my large collection of Shiebler, Kerr and Unger sterling silver and will be listing new items each day.
