I have been maintaining my slot car layout in a
damp shed for years and my friends have asked me what's the trick. Nothing
magic:
TRACK MUST BE SWITCHED OFF AND DISCONNECTED FROM ANY POWER ALWAYS
I dust the track with a soft dry duster on a stick before starting
racing. Dust can settle and spoil connectivity.
When the track starts to lose its shine (oxidise/crode/rust) you
need more than a duster. This is when an abrasive is required. I use
a mix of three grades with the coarsest used for heavier oxidation. A
polisher and some elbow grease (rubbing back and forward repeatedly for a
couple of minutes) should bring back the shine if not improve
connectivity.
Its amazing how the performance of my cars improves when I give the
circuit a lap with one of the pads.
After I have used one its time to remove all the dust/oxide that I
have just taken off the track. I use a piece of kitchen roll. This is very
important so I can see the benefit of my work in the performance of my
track.
Avoid track chevrons etc as theses are strong enough to remove them
also.
