This style of painting is called 'Company School painting' and was very popular during British colonial days in India. The paintings normally depict Indian local scenes, customs and tradespeople.
Though most of the paintings were done in North India (Uttar Pradesh) the scene depicted could be from any part of India.
The paintings provide an immense opportunity to study the local practices.
These are painted on Mica sheets and hence, sometimes, called Mica paintings.
The Mica sheet is about 11 by 7.5 cm. The corners are intact and tucked in. The mica sheet is mounted on paper and which in turn is mounted on cardboard. The cardboard's dimension is 20 by 12.5 cm
