Offered for sale is this rare, large antique bandbox made of birch wood and decorated with a gorgeous yellow, large repeat, block-printed pastoral wallpaper featuring a shepherdess and young man who is sitting on a bench out-of-doors while they look to be courting. THE YELLOW SHADE OF THE WALLPAPER IS BRIGHTER AND IS NOT SO FADED AND DULL AS MY PHOTOS APPEAR ON MY LISTING.  I\

The girl holds her shepherd’s crook and this setting has greenish/brown to deep olive colored trees, a garland of grass at their feet and in front of of the young man, at his feet is his upturned hat and a small urn which it appears he is about to plant some greenery in as he holds it in his hands.

Typical of the wonderful early 1820’s wallpaper from this period, the couple is framed by large white

lacy swags. There are also a myriad of small white “V” s also block printed on the yellow ground paper.(I am about ready for a new, updated phone. I've been noticing that my photos aren't showing color as true to life as it once did.

The design repeats on the sides of the box as well as the lid. The bandbox lid is attached to the sides by tiny nails. A couple are missing which causes one small portion of the side(see pics) to be loose. A couple nails would secure it again; one can see the tiny holes where the nails are missing.

When the lid is off one can see a small part of the upper box is missing. It is in very good condition for its 200 years with some losses to the paper and smoke staining but the paper is remarkably fresh. Often these wallpaper boxes have very faded lids but this one is very good. Newsprint of the period is papered into the whole interior. (Please excuse the packing peanuts inside the box; we are moving shortly.) The bottom of the box is birch wood, too.

Measurements are 26” X 20” X 14 1/4”. It had been residing in a museum for a long time which may partly explain its’ nicer than usually found condition.

Please message me with any questions you may have. I am always happy to help. Please look at all the photos as they are part of the description. This will need an oversized box, but it is not too heavy. I don’t have it boxed up yet but am open to using another shipping method other than USPS if desired. For now I will just estimate the ship/ins. cost but I will refund the difference to the buyer if it ends up cheaper. If it ends up higher I will pay for the difference.

Thank you for your interest in my auctions and I hope you will stop again soon.

Blessings,

Michelle
