From
South Africa, a Unique Silver (80%) 5 Shillings of King George VI dated 1950.
Graded by NGC PROOFLIKE DETAILS / REV CLEANED. ID: 2910120-016 .The
pedigree states “Ex. J.P. Roux”.
Mr
J.P. Roux was the director of the South African Mint for 15 years from 1943 to
1958/9. This is confirmed in a message kindly sent to me by the SA Mint, the
text from which is in the images. The coin originally came in a paper envelope
on which is written in Afrikaans, “Een 1950 uitgesoekte 5/- ann Willian van Oom
en tante J.P. Roux 25-12-50”. In English, “One special select 5 Shillings to
Willian from Uncle and Aunt J.P. Roux 25-12-50”. The coin was thus a Christmas
present in 1950 from Mr Roux to his nephew. A scan of the envelope is in the
images and the original forms part of this sale.
The
SA Mint uses the term “Special Select” to indicate a proof-like strike.
