While the Philadelphia issue of this year is famously as common as it gets, the 1924-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a starkly contrasting rarity in high grade. Although more than 3 million pieces were produced, most of this production figure was apparently melted in the mid-1930s, following President Roosevelt's Gold Recall executive order. Any Mint State example can be considered a better-date coin in the series, and most exist in grades of MS62 to MS64, finer pieces rare. This choice example displays a bold strike and vibrant honey-gold luster,

Created by master sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the 1924-S $20 Gold Saint Gaudens is the descendant of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle which first entered circulation in 1850. The denomination was created as a means of exhausting an overage in gold supply due to the 1849 California Gold Rush. They were never intended for general use in commerce as the amount easily equated to a month's wage during the time of issue - making them impractical to carry as a coin. Instead, they were struck to monetize the surplus of gold and to be used exclusively in business transactions, largely between banks.
