A near new MDS 3.5cc (19/20 size) Model Diesel Engine complete with
Muffler. RC with Throttle fitted. Be different fly a diesel engine instead of a
glow. No Glow Plug required. Huge props can be turned. Far larger than Glow
engines. Slow low revving large props are suitable to scale models where the
diesels low note is more realistic than a two stroke glow. Its a super size for a throttled vintage style power plant.
This is a re list as we got the engine size incorrect.

Excellent quality modern machinery manufactured model aircraft engine.
See below for information regard MDS engines.
Peter Tarn is a model engineer of very good
reputation and is known for his refurbishments of vintage engines as well as
his own design/ specific Diesel Conversions of glow engines. This is one such
engine. The seller is a massive fan of Peter Tarns Diesels but after purchasing
this one realised, we already had an similar MDS made by Peter.
Peter’s conversions appear on eBay ‘now and then’
and are often bid quite high in price as the demand for them has been good.
There was a feature in Aeromodeller and this feature certainly helped introduce
the Diesel conversions to a wider audience.
This is a near new MDS ABC R/C engine featuring
Schnurle porting and a crankshaft supported in twin ball races. It is a
powerful sports engine manufactured in Russia for Robbe & Ripmax. It is
complete with muffler and carburettor / throttle.
The engine has been converted to diesel operation
by Peter Tarn. The new cylinder head contains a cast iron sleeve with a
precision-fitted steel contra-piston. The carburettor has been modified
internally to make it suitable for diesel operation. All the diesel
conversion parts have been manufactured by the Peter Tarn using Hardinger super-precision machinery.
The muffler has been fitted with a blanking plug to
replace the pressure nipple as muffler pressure is not recommended for diesel
operation.
The engine has been bench tested using a 10" x
5" GRP propeller and D-1000 fuel. It runs smoothly with good
response to the compression setting. The Idle is reliable and recovery to
full throttle is rapid. Compression is more than adequate, much, much more than
adequate.
Postage
in the UK is £6.95 including insurance and is LESS that cost.
We can post
this Worldwide preferably not by the GSP as because when they categorise the
engine as a two stroke along with garden equipment and the like some countries
block the import as ‘petrol’ two strokes are banned from New Zealand and
Australia. Of course, this is a Toy Model Engine and categorised correctly it
should arrive OK.
From 'our man on the inside'. The Rise and Fall and Fall of MDS and latterly RMX.
Before condemning this engine before reading this
please note that this is a later modern manufacture MDS – It is not a first
edition MDS, it is a later edition that was sold by Ripmax and Robbe &
later became Ripmax’ s RMX engines. Ripmax decided to face lift the ‘name’ and
reputation of MDS but alas the damage was done when the UK was first introduced
to MDS.
The story goes that Ripmax used MDS engines in very
hard moulded polystyrene boxes as ballast on a shipment from Russia. There were
1000’s of engines manufactured over a number of decades by a Russian work
program where engines were produced and produced and stacked high just to keep
a work force making product. These engines were rough but incredible value.
Some stored sold MDS ‘golds’ 40’s and 61’s for £15 to £25 an engine. Sometimes
less. We remember seeing MDS 25 engines for £9.99 each at a show. These engines
were in a white polystyrene box. They had poorly assembled fits and
carburettors were often missing o rings etc. Once of the best buys of that
first round of MDS was a Rear 15 with Tuner Pipe. I can remember buying two for
£30.00.
Ripmax then decided to Manufacture in Russia a
range of high-quality economic engines to compete with the Chinese ASP, Magnum,
SC etc.
The MDS Robbe/ Ripmax version was born. The name had
already taken a battering as the initial flooding of the market by poor quality
product had put folk off MDS. But here they were with proper instructions and
very nicely manufactured all new product. If the engine had been tested
thoroughly before coming to market we could be hailing MDS as the engine of the
90’s , but the carburettors had issues. It took Ripmax a good 18 months to
solve the issues with carb rebuild kits. Finally, the engine ran well and
worked as it should. BUT… for a second time the modellers in Europe had bought
into an engine that didn’t work like it said it would. 100% better than the
first lot, but Ripmax taking a good look at Enya carbs re designed the carbs
and the Mk 2 MDS /Ripmax Robbe was out. But proving difficult to sell. Modellers
had got the previous engines running by fitting Enya and OS carbs that often
cost twice as much as the engine. The new Carbs worked, but not many would give
them a chance. Slowly people saw the engines running well, but it was two late.
The MDS name had been ruined. The jokes would always be there. The best door
stop made etc.
The range MDS was re ‘thunk’ again, re boxed several
times, given 2 year warranties and eventually the name change into RMX engines. Short for 'RIPMAX'
The engine in this listing is manufactured to a
very high standard. The carb works fine. Its typical of diesel engines. lots
more popping and banging. But that’s the character of larger model diesel
engines.
