This is a complete 4-volume set of The New Encyclopedia of Archaeological Excavations in the Holy Land, by the Israel Exploration Society & Carta, Jerusalem. Organized alphabetically, it describes and analyzes archaeological excavations carried out during the past century or more in the Holy Land, on both sides of the Jordan. With 365 articles prepared by more than 200 archaeologists from around the world, this comprehensive encyclopedia of excavations and explorations presents a rich and extensive body of archaeological material. The set is liberally illustrated with drawings and photographs, some in color but most in B&W. A detailed bibliography is appended to each article. Some of the sites are well known to laypeople (e.g., Masada, Petra), but many are familiar only to specialists. Church and synagogue libraries, large public libraries, and academic libraries will find this an invaluable reference.

The books are hardbound in glossy burgundy, with the title printed in gilt on the covers, and the title, volume, organizers, and publishers in gilt on the spines. The back cover is printed with "Academic Reference Division, Simon and Schuster", and the ISBN, also in gilt. The endsheets are all a map to "Main Excavations in the Holy Land". Each book appears never to have been read. The final volume contains an extensive index presented in a variety of foci (chronological, persons, places, biblical references, etc.). 1552 pages total.
