This is a vintage Bausch and Lomb 40x scope. Has a really long working length on about 1 inch or more and a reticle in the eyepiece end. Smooth 26 mm diameter cylinder. Not sure if this was meant to be hand held or if there was a holder of some sort. Bausch and Lomb had a “Gem” microscope that looks similar but this is a bigger diameter and the long working distance is really great for your special application you’ve been thinking of. I got this from an estate and don’t have more information.
