Historical context :

Industrialization and modernization (1866-1914)

During the Industrial Revolution, the economy, then mainly agricultural, gradually moved from a village structure to the model of the private farm. The country is gradually industrializing, particularly in textiles and sawmilling. However, this brought little economic and social progress and, with the help of the population increase, one million Swedes emigrated to the United States between 1850 and 1890.

The 19th century saw the emergence of a liberal opposition press, the abolition of the guild monopoly in favor of free enterprise, tax and electoral reforms, the introduction of national military service and the development of three main parties, social democrat, liberal and conservative.

It was at this time that Alfred Nobel invented dynamite; and that the Nobel Prizes are created.
