HISTORICAL CONTEXT :

The French Royal Navy was almost non-existent before 1624.

She inherits several traditions:

in the Mediterranean that of the order of Saint John of Jerusalem which recruited its knights from the best families of the French nobility to train the officers of the Levant Fleet whose main port was first in Fréjus, then in Marseille and in Toulon;
in the Channel with Normandy which, since William the Conqueror, has always produced intrepid sailors and possessed active ports;
in the Atlantic, the Navy of the Duchy of Brittany which will constitute the core of the Ponant fleet. The law and particular jurisdictions of Brittany, including its naval military force, will be preserved until the Revolution which will mark the end of the administrative and territorial independence of Brittany, although the French and Breton crowns had been united since 1532 .

During the Revolution, the National Navy succeeded the Royal Navy, organized by Richelieu from 1624. Under the First and Second Empires, it was called the Imperial Navy.

The Navy is still today colloquially called “La Royale”. The former location of the Ministry and then the General Staff of the French Navy at 2 rue Royale, in Paris, was perhaps the origin of this formula.
