a prominent English potter. He discovered the recipe for jasperware clay after experimenting with different 

types of clay for years, and kept the recipe secret for the rest of his life. Jasperware is considered 

unique among historians due to the fact that its discovery single handedly brought 

about the mass production of stoneware.
