Edward Stanwood was born in Augusta, Maine on September 16,

1841. He was a historian, newspaper and magazine editor, correspondent and

author. Edward graduated from Bowdoin College in 1861. He was Assistant editor

(and later editor) of the Boston Daily Advertiser. (1867-1883) Managing Editor

of the Youth's Companion. (1887-1911)He wrote "History of the

Presidency"; a history of his class at Bowdoin; "History of American

Tariff Controversies"; life of James G. Blaine, for whom he served as

secretary for one year, he also wrote for the American Statesman's series and

other publications. He was the editor for America of the Stateman's Year Book

for many years. He was a trustee of Bowdoin  College for many years and recording secretary

of the Massachusetts Historical Society from 1905 until his death. He died in

Brookline, Massachusetts on October 11, 1923 at the age of 82. He is buried

beside his wife Eliza Topliff Stanwood in Augusta, Maine.
