Description:

Here is an amazing 175-year-old pictorial chronicle of the area in southwest Asia formerly known in ancient times as the “ Levant” -- Palestine, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, and Syria, along with Egypt, portions of Iraq, and the Sinai Peninsula, the whole referred to loosely as “the Holy Land.”

Ostensibly a pictorial treatment of scenes from the Bible, this rare antique book is so much more. In addition to many rare Biblical scenes (some of which I have never seen depicted elsewhere), t contains numerous rare images of ancient and modern life in the Levant (“modern” meaning as of 1841), among peoples of Hebrew and Arabic descent, including modes of dress and personal adornment, examples of art, musical instruments and more.

The many engravings, totaling 200 in number, are accompanied by captions and explanatory text detailing the historical, religious and cultural significance behind the pictures. The text also correlates the engravings with their scriptural references in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, by book and chapter.

To help you appreciate the full scope of this rare and highly collectible book, I have furnished some helpful details below, namely my own summary of the illustrations featured inside, followed by a generous sampling of the images themselves.

I hope you’ll take a few moments to have a look.
