He has written and presented the BAFTA shortlisted documentaries Battle of Britain and Dam Busters for the BBC, and his WWII podcast, We Have Ways of Making You Talk, now has millions of listeners.

James Holland is one of the pre-eminent military and WWII historians of our time--the successor to Antony Beevor, Max Hastings, and Stephen Ambrose. His masterful storytelling is matched by the depth of his research, which often reframes history. His choice of main characters presents a vivid picture of the war on all sides at both strategic and on-the-ground levels. Following the Sherwood Rangers especially for the 11 dramatic months from D-Day (June 1944) until Germany surrendered (May 1945), Holland offers an intimate and original perspective on the endgame of WWII in Europe. The Sherwood Rangers were the first British troops to cross into Nazi Germany in 1945. The Rangers had close ties to the US. Their tanks were the US-made Sherman, the most reliable tank in the war; and they often supported American infantry, so their story will have strong appeal for US military buffs. Tank stories hold a particular fascination for fans of military history and sell very well--perhaps because they were so dangerous and vulnerable. Indeed, in the 77 days of the Normandy campaign, the Rangers regiment lost (killed or wounded) 75% of its 200 troopers and almost 100% of its 36 officers. They were all replaced, but the unit suffered terrible losses. Holland has a personal connection to the Rangers. Commanding officer Stanley Christopherson's son is a close friend and they walked some of the Rangers' Normandy battlefields together. Dozens of the Rangers' fraternity (children of those who served and a couple of Rangers still alive) have provided never-before-seen documents, letters, and photographs, which add greatly to the immediacy of the story.
