Rare bookend slide rack / holder featuring a fierce pirate, armed with pistol and knife tucked in his waist sash, and brandishing a saber.  I bet he knows how to use it.

Cast in grey metal (spelter) and painted in bright, baked on enamel colors.  Made by Kronheim & Oldenbusch (K&O), their logo on the back of the upright.  This piece really is just one of their single bookends, to which they attached the slide mechanism to the bottom.  K&O is the only company who did this.  They are fun and useful items.  Circa 1930.

Condition is great with the caveat that the tip of the saber has been re-attached (see last pic).  If you look on eBay at the actual bookend pairs of this design, more often than not the tip of the saber has broken off.  At least this one was repaired, with the injury not really noticeable except up close.

Otherwise, no damage.  Paint is original and almost flawless.  Slide mechanism takes a little effort but does work.  The piece stands flat and stable.

This is one of K&O's biggest pieces:  9 1/2 inches tall; base is 4 1/4 inches across the front X 4 3/4 inches from front of base to back of slide in "closed" position, and 7 1/4 inches from front of base to back of slide in "extended" position.  Weighs 3 1/4 pounds.

Perfect gift for a boy's room, especially for holding his collection of Robert Louis Stevenson books.  "Treasure Island" still is a great adventure story, even 140 years after originally published.
