The largest launch vehicle, the Long March 3B (CZ-3B), made its maiden flight carrying an Intelsat 708 communication satellite. At 3:01 Beijing time, the CZ-3B was ignited and then slowly lifted off from Pad 2 in Xichang Satellite Launch Centre (XSLC), located in southwestern China. The launch was broadcast live on CCTV and the signal was also transmitted to Intelsat in the United States. During the first two seconds, everything seemed to go well. But it vehicle's guidance platform short-circuited right at liftoff, led to loss of attitude control. The vehicle hit the ground at T+23 seconds and exploded, killing at least 6 people on the ground.
