This is among a large number of playbills currently being listed from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare March 14th, 1949 "On Stage" playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II musical hit "SOUTH PACIFIC" at the Shubert Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production would open April 7th, 1949 at the Majestic Theatre in New York City and run for 1925 performances.) ..... Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 10 Tony Awards, the musical starred MARY MARTIN as "Ensign Nellie Forbush" and EZIO PINZA as "Emile de Becque" and featured MYRON McCORMICK, BILL TABBERT, MARTIN WOLFSON, HARVEY STEPHENS, JUANITA HALL, BETTA ST. JOHN, HENRY SLATE and ARCHIE SAVAGE ..... CREDITS: Music and Lyrics by RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborated on "Oklahoma!", "Carousel", "The King and I", "Flower Drum Song", "South Pacific" and "The Sound of Music" among others); Book by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II and JOSHUA LOGAN adapted from JAMES A. DETAILS: The sixteen page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers, bios of each of the leading actors and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "My Girl Back Home" and "Soft Shoe Dance" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor soiling to the front cover, a seam split below the bottom staple and moderate edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
